I had never heard of a Midge. Wait…I take that back. I had a Midge doll. She was Barbie’s best friend. But that’s not the Midge I’m talking about.
A midge is a small mosquito-lookalike bug that likes to hang around water. In Sun Lakes there are several lakes and the homes surrounding those lakes will notice these little annoying pests right about this time of year.
Midges in the Sun Lakes area don’t bite like mosquitoes so they pose no harm to humans or animals but they are annoying when they swarm. Male midges form large swarms when all conditions are optimal…humidity, temperature, light and they are very attracted to light.
Midges can fly up to a quarter mile from their breeding sites so even though the IronOaks Association has taken measures to reduce the midge population in the lakes, they can still fly into the area from other locations surrounding the community.
So what’s a person to do? Number one, turn off outdoor lights if you can. Or, install yellow bulbs that Midges can’t see.
How about that bug light? You thought that was a great idea didn’t you? The truth be told, bug lights tend to attract more bugs then they kill, so you might want to rethink that little blue light show…Unless you find the sound of frying bugs just a little bit comforting.
The season for Midges in Sun Lakes is relatively short, so don’t fret…they’ll soon be gone.
Two of Sun Lakes’ best kept secrets are the recycling centers.
One is located just west of the Sun Lakes Country Club clubhouse. This recycling center accepts aluminum cans, newspapers, telephone books and cardboard. No plastic or glass. (for more information you can reach the center at 480-895-9270.
The second recycling location is located behind the Sun Lakes Sheriff’s Posse location at Pima & Riggs Rd. This location accepts any kind of metal, newspapers, plastic, cardboard, telephone books and magazines. No glass, however. The phone number for this location is 480-895-8751.

Identity theft is a growing problem in our world today. One important step to take is to shred any documents containing identifying information (especially social security and account numbers) prior to throwing the documents away.
If you’re like me…you may throw these documents into a bin to shred all at one time and the box full of “identity trash” can get a little full…especially if you’re throwing out old tax forms. The thought of sitting and shredding for an hour is a little overwhelming…so here’s a solution!
Bring your “shredding material” to the SHRED-A-THON that will be held in the Oakwood Country Club Parking lot.
The shred-a-thon is being provided as a courtesy by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and a big thank you goes out to them!
Here are some details ~
When? Wednesday, 8/18/2010
What time?6am until 10am
Where? The Oakwood Country Club Parking Lot
What material can be shredded? Almost anything can be shredded, including the paperclips and binder clips that are on paper materials; phone books are accepted, boxes of old checks, etc. They will even shred the box you bring in if you don’t want to take it with you.
How big can the material be? Any paper materials are fine, including those extra-long mortgage documents, checks, newspapers, etc.
What size are the boxes? The boxes should be no larger than the banker’s size boxes. (approx 11″ x 12.25″ x 16 legal size)
How many boxes? 2 “banker’s size boxes” per person are free. Boxes after that are $10 each. If you bring your materials in something that isn’t a banker’s size box, they will guesstimate how it measures up. So it’s isn’t mandatory to bring everything in a banker’s box.

The 4th verse of the National Anthem that should always be remembered and how about a push to include this whenever the anthem is sung? Our country was established as one Nation under God. Ignoring that won’t make it go away….or will it?
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
