Looking for Arizonans 99 years old or more

Do you know someone 99 years or older?  The National Centenarian Awareness Project (NCAP)  is looking for those honored citizens!

CentenariansThe NCAP’s mission is to help Arizonans over 100 feel like a cornerstone of society, rather than a pushed-aside novelty.   According to Phoenix Magazine, Lynn Peters Adler, Director of the NCAP moved to Arizona in 1984 from New York, where she studied elder law at Yeshiva University’s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.  Advocating for the elderly was an interest that sprung up in Adler’s teenage years, when she watched her 60-something grandmother struggle with age-related feelings of shame and marginalization.

According to Adler our Centenarians don’t sit around worrying about dying.  They sit around worrying about living.  Many have lost their spouses and many have lost friends and children.  But they’re not quitters.  They go on and enjoy their lives.

The United States has the highest number of centenarians in the world with 830 living in Arizona according to the 2010 US Census Bureau which counted 70,490 centenarians.  In 1950, there were just 2300.

Our centenarians are inspirations and a link to our history.  They need to be recognized and cherished.

If you know of someone 99 or older who would be interested in joining the NCAP’s Centenarian Network you can go to their website at www.adlercentenarians.org or by calling 1-800-243-1889.  If you know of an Arizona resident, company or organization 100 years old or more that would be interested in attending the Arizona Centennial Foundation’s Centenarian Brunch on February 14, 2012, visit az100years.org/centenarian-brunch.

If you know of a Sun Lake resident who is 99 years old or more, please let us know!  We’d love to feature them on our website!
