Sun Lakes, AZ get ready…The Midges are Here!

midges in sun lakes oakwoodI had never heard of a Midge.  Wait…I take that back.  I had a Midge doll.  She was Barbie’s best friend.  But that’s not the Midge I’m talking about.

A midge is a small mosquito-lookalike bug that likes to hang around water.  In Sun Lakes there are several lakes and the homes surrounding those lakes will notice these little annoying pests right about this time of year.

Midges in the Sun Lakes area don’t bite like mosquitoes so they pose no harm to humans or animals but they are annoying when they swarm.  Male midges form large swarms when all conditions are optimal…humidity, temperature, light and they are very attracted to light.

Midges can fly up to a quarter mile from their breeding sites so even though the IronOaks Association has taken measures to reduce the midge population in the lakes, they can still fly into the area from other locations surrounding the community.

So what’s a person to do?  Number one, turn off outdoor lights if you can.  Or, install yellow bulbs that Midges can’t see.

How about that bug light?  You thought that was a great idea didn’t you?  The truth be told, bug lights tend to attract more bugs then they kill, so you might want to rethink that little blue light show…Unless you find the sound of frying bugs just a little bit comforting.

The season for Midges in Sun Lakes is relatively short, so don’t fret…they’ll soon be gone.
